Gaza, 2010. Amal doesn’t remember what happened to her neighborhood. She only remembers a big tree that is no longer there that the children would climb. She remembers she used to bring her father coffee in the orchard. Then came the war, and Amal and her brothers lost everything. They are the children of the Samouni family, a community of farmers living in the rural outskirts of Gaza City. A year ago, they buried their dead. Now, they have to rebuild not only their homes, but also their memories: the life before the war, the words of their father, the tragic events that struck their family. In their dialogue with the past, the young Samounis begin to envisage their future.

Penelope Bortoluzzi
Nata a Venezia, Penelope Bortoluzzi è una regista e produttrice di film documentari per il cinema e la televisione. Dopo una formazione letteraria e musicale nella sua città natale, si è laureata in cinema a Parigi. Ha realizzato due cortometraggi, Coulisses (2003) e Caroline (2007, per ARTE). Il suo primo lungometraggio, Fondamenta delle convertite (2008), ha vinto la Menzione speciale del concorso internazionale al Festival dei Popoli. Il suo secondo film, La passione di Erto (2013), è stato presentato al 66º Festival di Locarno. Nel 2010 ha fondato a Parigi la casa di produzione Picofilms, con la quale ha prodotto fra gli altri i film di Stefano Savona Tahrir Liberation Square (2011), di cui ha curato anche il montaggio, e La strada dei Samouni (2018), di cui è anche co-sceneggiatrice; quest’ultimo, presentato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, ha ricevuto il premio per il miglior documentario al Festival di Cannes 2018.
