About Mora Constellation:
Commissioned by PS Design, Mora Constellation is presented at Palazzo Mora as part of Personal Structures — Confluences, the eighth edition of the international contemporary art exhibition organised by the European Cultural Centre Italy. The installation is a finalist in the ECC Awards 2026.
Mora Constellation, by the London-based interdisciplinary design practice Studio Waldemeyer, is a site-specific installation of 111 responsive candles that transform the timber-ceilinged corridor of Palazzo Mora into a constellation of individually handcrafted and engineered candles. Each candle responds independently to the movement of visitors, creating an immersive environment in which architecture, light and human presence become connected. The installation combines Italian handcrafted borosilicate glass with bespoke electronics, custom sensing technology and interactive software. It continues the studio’s research, begun in 2011, into how contemporary design and engineering can recreate the warmth, atmosphere and emotional resonance of candlelight. Mora Constellation brings together ancient symbolism and contemporary engineering, handcrafted materials and custom electronics, architecture and interaction. Inspired by the timeless atmosphere of candlelit Venetian palazzos and churches, the installation changes subtly as visitors move through the space.
